Living in Austin

With a vibrant live music scene and plenty of green space, Austin is known as one of the hippest cities in the South. Neighborhoods such as Zilker, South Lamar, and Downtown Austin combine food trucks, art venues, and lakes. North Central Austin is across the river from downtown yet close to restaurants and bars, and North Austin contains historic homes as well as shopping areas such as the Arboretum. West Austin puts you close to the gorgeous Texas Hill Country and Lake Travis. Housing prices are more affordable but are increasing as more companies move their headquarters and offices to Austin.

Getting around

Austin is fairly spread out, and lots of people rely on cars to get from their Austin apartments to work. However, the downtown area is friendly to bikes and pedestrians. CapMetro buses run around the city, and the frequency and number of lines are expanding as Austin's population increases. The commuter MetroRail runs from Downtown Austin, north to Leander.

Weather

Summer temperatures hover near 100°F, so people cool off in a swimming pool or head to Lady Bird Lake. Winter temperatures rarely dip below 40°F. It usually rains every month of the year, but only a few days each month.
