With around 100,000 people, San Mateo is a small city in the heart of Silicon Valley. Due to its location, the larger cities of San Jose, San Francisco, and Oakland are all easily accessible. The downtown area of San Mateo is one of the most happening in the Bay Area, with over 800 shops and restaurants. The city also has public parks sprinkled throughout the city. Besides that, this area is quiet with lots of families living in houses and townhomes. The major employers in the city aren't tech companies but rather the local medical center and school district.
SamsTrans offers bus service around the city as well as to nearby cities including Hillsborough, Foster City, and Belmont. The Caltrain stops in San Mateo and runs north to Burlingame, San Bruno, and San Francisco and south to Redwood City and San Jose. Parking isn't too bad, and a car makes it easy to cross the San Mateo/Hayward bridge.

San Mateo Japanese Garden
Located in Central Park in the downtown area of San Mateo, this garden was designed by Japanese landscape architect Nagao Sakurai. This peaceful spot includes a pagoda, koi pond, tea house, and bamboo grove. Staff conduct daily koi feedings, which visitors are welcome to watch.
