Living in Houston

With over 2.3 million residents, Houston is the largest city in Texas. While downtown Houston is compact, the entire city sprawls out over 630 square miles. The city is so large that people refer to places based on whether they're inside out outside the loop, which is Interstate 610. Midtown, Greenway/Upper Kirby, NRG Park, and the Texas Medical Center are inside the loop, while Willowbrook and the Energy Corridor are outside.

Getting around

Since Houston is massive, getting from one side of the city to the other can take over an hour, no matter how you travel. The car still reigns supreme here, but there are often accidents and heavy traffic. Houston METRO offers public transportation in the form of light rail and buses, but you'll likely have to make at least one connection.

Weather

Houston experiences rainfall throughout the year, but the spring and fall are the wettest seasons. Most summer days reach 90°F, so it’s good to know where the nearest swimming pool is. While winters are mild, temperatures can dip below freezing.
